Seven ways BING is engineering picture search to be better than Google. An excellent article from Bing’s own blog:
- Understanding what is being searched for: person, place, or thing?
- How do other users feel about it? using big data
- Perceiving pictures like a human brain does
- Thematic intent focus brings up pictures to be used for the same purpose
- Not including duplicates or near-duplicates, to improve breadth of image selection
- Clustering images in a way that makes them easier to view at a glance
- Better quality images first.

Blogging is at its heart a social thing, so I think the challenge is a great idea for newbie bloggers as well as perhaps jaded old hands . . .

Wired magazine is so excited it’s misquoting Star Trek – Google Hummingbird: Where No Search Has Gone Before (or do I mean Star Wars?)
Hummingbird is a completely new search algorithm that affects 90 percent of all searches, and we’ve all been using it for a month without even noticing. That’s exactly the intention. Discrete timely, relevant delivery of the content with legacy. That’s what evergreen content provides, and Google is now prioritising search to find and display it.
